The benefits of youth clubs

When I was younger, I used to go to a local youth club. I’d hang out with friends, listen to music, and never really think much more about it.

Today, I’m fortunate to hold a full-time role that allows me to be involved in several youth clubs. I’ve had the privilege of meeting some incredible young people. We’ve played games, had meaningful conversations, and sometimes young people let you into their world just a little.

What I’ve come to realise over this time, is that each youth club is completely unique. There’s no such thing as “just a youth club.” NYY works hard to create spaces where young people feel safe and welcome, somewhere young people can simply show up. Whether they want to relax on a beanbag, play games, sing, dance, or just be, it's their choice.

That freedom, that “if they want to,” is everything. The consistency of a welcoming space, and the trust built between young people and staff or volunteers, reflects the genuine passion behind NYY’s work. It doesn’t matter what kind of group young people come from, where they’re from, or what kind of day they’ve had—we’re here, and so is that space.

I have recently had the pleasure of assisting a faith led group to open a new youth drop in club. The group has observed the need for youth provision within their community, and I will look forward to my visit with great enthusiasm!
